How to Dress Your Baby for a Newborn Photography Session

When you give birth to a child, your first instinct – after you get through delivery and labor process – is to show off your newborn. One of the best ways to do this is to have a photo shoot. Indeed, having professional photographs of your newborn will allow you to show off your new child, but it will also allow you the opportunity to hold on to some keepsakes for when your child is older. It can be fun to look back through photos of those first few weeks. Before you have a photo shoot, though, you want to have a few tips and tricks for how to dress your newborn. Here are some ways to dress your baby for a newborn photography session.

  1. Make sure that your baby is comfortable – this is a number one priority. On top of everything, you want to make sure that your baby is comfortable. This means that you want to choose loose clothing. When it comes to newborn photos, you don’t want your baby to look visibly uncomfortable.
  2. Make sure that you don’t include any items that can be easily swallowed. When you hire a photography service, like Amy Tripple Photography, you don’t want to worry about whether or not your newborn is safe. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure that you don’t dress your child with any accouterments that could fall off and become a choking hazard. For instance, any clothing items with small buttons or rhinestones are a big no-no.
  3. Make sure that the clothing you choose doesn’t have any bright, reflective surfaces. When it comes to taking great pictures, you don’t want there to be any bright reflective surfaces. These types of surfaces can catch the flash and ruin some of the shots. The last thing you want is for an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime shot to be ruined because the flash burned out part of the photo. To avoid this, you don’t want to dress your child in any mirrored surfaces.
  4. Make sure that there are no items that can distract your child. On top of avoiding mirrored surfaces, you also want to avoid any clothing items that have distractions. For instance, if the clothing you choose has strings, straps, buckles or any other items, your newborn may have trouble looking at the camera. It is already difficult to capture your newborn’s attention, so adding any other distractions can make the whole process a lot more difficult.
  5. Make sure that you limit the amount of clothes – most newborns can’t fit into most clothes. On top of everything, you may want to limit the amount of clothing your child wears during the photo shoot. Most babies spend the first few weeks of their life in a blanket. When it comes down to it, you may simply want to swaddle your child in a blanket. This way, your newborn will be warm and comfortable. In the end, it is all about making sure your newborn is warm and cozy.
